St. Augustine

I learned in school many years ago that St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest city in America, but I have never been there nor learned much more about the city over the years. But last summer one of the young ladies at our congregation married a young man from there and now they live in that city.

The young woman’s mother and dad are very dear friends of ours, so after their first visit to their daughter’s new home we heard more about St. Augustine. One of the main things we heard was about the event called First Friday Weekend Artwalk. Each month on the weekend of the first Friday of the month, the art galleries of the city sponsor an event designed to draw big crowds to the galleries.

The St. Augustine Artwalk features free self guided tours of all the galleries, allowing patrons to visit and view all sorts of art; photography, painting, sculpture and more. There are free sightseeing tours on the trains and the trolleys, FREE PARKING, and many of the shops have free wine and cheese tasting opportunities.

I have no doubt that our friends will go often to see their daughter and son in law, and that they will just happen to arrange in on the weekends of first Friday!

Salisbury, Dominica

The congregation where I worship has just planted a church in a small village on the west coast of Dominica, called Salisbury. We are planning to take a team there next summer, but we are finding limited guest houses or vacation rentals in the area to house our team. It may limit the size of our group, or we may have to stay in the capital city of Roseau and drive to the village each day. But that is not the best for us, as we like to be in the community so that we can build relationships, as well as save the time that we would be on the road each day.

For example, you can go to the web site and open the Canada Hotel Guides page. from there select a city and read the guide to help you not only find accommodations, but also find out the local places of interest, schedules and other important information. Caribbean Home

I have been traveling to the Caribbean for more than twenty five years and I am particularly smitten with the island of Dominica. It has been my aspiration to retire to the island and buy an old planter’s house. But in recent days developments have made it more likely that I will have to stay in the States to take care of some loved ones.

So why not find some Caribbean house plans and build my retirement home here? I found one by Garant that has lots of Caribbean gingerbread, a veranda on both the first and second stories and lots of windows and openness!

Rocky Point

Imagine sitting with your loved one on the deck of a condo overlooking the Sea of Cortez, relaxing in the morning sun sipping a cup of coffee. Rocky Point condo rentals can offer that very moment at La Princesa de Penasco E #306. The room can accommodate six in luxurious amenities.

Or if you would like a bit more privacy, you could arrange to stay in the Beachcomber, a large three bedroom home that has a private patio facing the ocean. It has a game room, an upper level sun deck and other special amenities to make your visit one to remember.

Uptown Saturday Night

I was amused last night when I told my friend about an event taking place in St. Augustine, Florida. He and his wife like to take trips to going to places that have a lot of opportunities for shopping for antiques and other hidden treasures.

They go almost every month to the sales that take place in Canton, Texas. They have told me about trips to Gladewater, Texas and, Kemah Texas. Both of those communities have almost become antique towns, with so many shops and markets aimed at the antique hunters.

When I told my friend about the event called, “Uptown Saturday Night” his wife went immediately to the computer and began to search for all of the things that she might find in St. Augustine. I have a feeling my friend is about to do some St. Augustine shopping.

As we were talking about baseball and politics and other extremely important topics, she would say “oh look, they have train tours”, or “Wow honey, they have book signings and art galleries”. She was especially amazed when she found out that every store along the street has an open house and that there is free parking provided by local mission. She said, “Sweetheart every store has refreshments, even WINE available to customers.”

She was disappointed to learn that she had missed the sales on October 27, but was excited to find out that the sale on November 24 was still a possibility for them.

Heavy Hauling

Living in South Texas, near the port of Houston and the vast petro chemical industry we see lots of large big trucks on the highways with heavy, sometimes with unusual loads. My grandkids and I like to try to guess what the vessel or piece of equipment is and which plant it may end up in.

Of course, much of the commercial material does not stay in the Houston area. Much of it is transported to domestic and foreign destinations. Companies on both sides of the Mexican border that have need of Mexico heavy hauling use LGI to help them arrange door to door shipping service that is safe and dependable.

Treated Wood

I was in need of replacement for my old privacy fence. It was in such bad shape that with hurricane season coming I was afraid the defense might end up in the living room. My son-in-law and I were able to build the fence, with a little help from my grandson.

Because the ground is so wet here near the Gulf Coast, we wanted to be sure and use treated wood so that we will not have to be replacing the fence again in a few years. We were afraid that the wood treatment would make the fence less attractive to the eye, but there are treatments today that are pleasing to see.

Educational Tours

When my middle daughter was a junior in high school, she was invited by the local Rotary club to represent them in a cultural exchange program by taking a tour of Malaysia and Singapore for six weeks. It was a life-changing educational experience for her.

Now that my oldest grandson is in high school, and have been looking into the possibility of presenting him with one of the educational student tours that might provide the same sort of eye opening opportunity for him. There are tours in the United States available of course, but we would like to make this an international experience for him.
