Joe Scruggs

When our girls were small, they loved the music of Joe Scruggs. He sang such classics as “I’m Too Full For Borccoli” and “Oh, By The Way.” He is giving a concert tonight in a town not too far from where we live and we are all going. All three of my daughters, my son in law, my four grand kids and my wife & I are taking two vehicles and traveling to the concert. It should be lots of fun for all of us.

Huntsville, Texas

I did my undergraduate degree at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. It is a very nice city in the rolling hills of the Piney Woods in East Texas. I loved the pine trees and the historical sites related to the first president of the Republic of Texas. But most of all I loved the people, especially in the church where I worshipped. I am going to see them Sunday for the first time in a couple of years. I can hardly wait!

Driving Texas

For the next few weeks my daughter and I will be driving all over South Texas together.  She has been serving as a missionary in Singapore for the last 15 years and is home making reports to the congregations that have supported her.  She is also seeking their continued support for another five years in the fields of Asia.  Fortunately none of the trips is very long, and our time in the car together will give us an opportunity to talk and enjoy one another.

Jalapeno Tree in Carthage

I had a speaking engagement in Carthage, Texas last night.  Because I had appointment as back here in Houston this morning, I planned to drive up and back in one day.  I asked a friend to ride with me to keep me awake on the drive home.  It was a pleasant drive up through East Texas, with its rolling hills and pine trees.

After the speech we joined several of the members for supper at a place called the Jalapeno Tree.  I had the best shrimp quesadilla I’ve ever eat and, and I’ve eaten quite a few.  This one also had shrimp and bacon bits inside with the shrimp.  The Visio so!

If you’re ever in Carthage, Texas, stop at the Jalapeno Tree.

Travelin to Arkansas

My dad was from the Northeast corner of Arkansas. We lived in South Texas. We made the 620 mile tirp at least once a year. In the 1950’s the car trips to see my grandparents took sixteen hours. With four of us kids in the back seat, it was crowded. And since we did not have air conditioning, it was hot too.

We usually had the leg room in the back seat piled as high as the bench seats with boxes, and all covered by a blanket, so we had room to sit or lie down. It was a long trip, but we all loved going to see Grandma and Grandpa.
